Ohia Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter provides a safe, supportive, and clean environment for survivors of domestic violence with or without children. Survivors may call for assistance through the Crisis and Shelter Access Line or may be referred by multiple community sources, including: police, clergy, schools, hospitals, and other domestic violence providers. While in the shelter, residents and their children are provided supportive services, such as safety planning, case management, domestic violence counseling groups, individual counseling, transitional planning, and referral sources. It is a time-out period for abused partners to learn about the dynamics of domestic violence, the cycle of abuse and how to develop a "safety plan". It is also a time for learning about and making choices; discovering that they are not at fault for the abuse; building self-esteem and learning self-empowerment. The Domestic Abuse Shelters help families and children escape from domestic violence and establish independent lives. The Shelter offers up to 120 days of a safe haven, basic needs (food, clothing etc.), counseling and services for children. Program participants learn dynamics of domestic violence, develop safety plans, improve self-esteem and learn healthy parenting skills. Children develop safety plans and learn they’re not responsible for domestic violence.
